Welcome! The focus of write mem is on Cisco Security concepts, especially as they relate to the CCIE Security certification. Of course, we’re not opposed to writing about related topics and other useful security items. We’re passionate about using this stuff and want to share that passion with others.

write mem got started in the summer of 2007 while Matt was working on his CCIE lab and Joe was working on his CCSP. We decided to blog for a couple reasons:

  1. To share our certification experience. We have several friends who are working toward their CCIE Security certifications and we wanted to create a way to share ideas among the group.
  2. As a personal knowledge repository. Blogging about Cisco concepts allows us to easily store, categorize, and search our own notes. Often, writing down one’s thoughts helps memory retention and the blog has done that for us. Having those notes sorted and searchable for future reference has been great, too.

Joe and Matt both work for Cisco on teams responsible for Support. Thus, we need to make it abundantly clear: the views expressed on this blog are ours and do not necessarily reflect the views of Cisco.

This is our personal blog about certification preparation. Inevitably we will link to Cisco.com, but we are not acting as agents of Cisco and we’re not trying to “astroturf”, really.

About Matt

I have worked for Cisco in several roles. I started out supporting the operation of managed security services. In that role, I learned to appreciate the elegance of network security and to understand its importance.

Since 2005 I have worked on the team that manages the Support Area of Cisco.com. I have written and contributed to hundreds of support documents on the website and managed the process that gets them out there.

I also spent a summer as an engineer in Cisco’s TAC where I supported our VPN customers. Talking to real customers and solving real problems definitely gave me some perspective on how critical infosec issues are in the world outside of my lab.

I became a CCIE in Security in December 2007.
